MATT Powers

Creative Director, EP, Writer

About

That’s me in the blue striped shirt, which is wrinkly on purpose.

I am a comedy writer, director, editor, and producer with 13 years of professional experience running writers rooms; providing top-level creative direction for major brands; and shepherding award-winning content from ideation through publishing.

My work recently won four Webby Awards at the 2024 ceremony: two for The ‘I Like Turtles’ Kid Still Likes Turtles, an idea I created and wrote for Paramount Pictures ahead of their release of ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’; one for Living With Lily, a fake sitcom I created and wrote for Duolingo; and one for Sound Detectives, a Stitcher podcast hosted by LeVar Burton that I edited story for during development.

From 2018 – 2023, I was the Creative Director and an EP for Team Coco, Conan O’Brien’s digital production company. In addition to working with the other EP’s on overall strategy, I oversaw the development, writing, production, and editing of eight scripted podcasts for Audible, Luminary, and in-house starring A-list talent, including A Total Switch Show, a show I created. I also wrote and directed digital video for Team Coco, like the web series Meet the Conan Staff and this sketch, which may be the only recorded evidence of Conan being in the same room as someone taller than him.

I began my comedy career as a writers’ assistant and headline contributor for The Onion. From there, I was hired as one of the original staff writers of ClickHole, a sister site of The Onion we created to satirize the internet. I later served as ClickHole Editor-In-Chief, overseeing a massive increase of our video output and the launch of two sub-verticals, PatriotHole and ResistanceHole. And with a promotion to a corporate-sounding title that presumably made my dad proud, I was concurrently VP of Comedy Development for The Onion, working with Hollywood producers to turn ideas from Onion creatives into TV and movies.

Thank you for reading my biography. Please bookmark this page as I will be adding a 100,000 word entry on my childhood, covering birth to age three, in the coming weeks.
